Kia has presented its a new EV4 electric car with a price of about €31500but it was not the only debut. The company is preparing to make electric vehicles more accessible to the general public with the Kia EV2 model. The automaker has demonstrated its concept and shared some of its features, and its launch is scheduled for next year.

The Kia EV2 is a compact city crossover that will compete with the Renault 5, among others. The expected starting price is around €30,000, making it a budget option for buyers looking for an affordable electric car.

Technical characteristics of Kia EV2

Although specific technical details remain unknown, the EV2 is likely to be based on a 400-volt version of Hyundai Motor Group’s E-GMP platform. The same architecture underpins Kia’s larger EV3 and EV4 models. The EV2 is expected to have similar powertrains – it could be a 201 hp electric motor paired with a 58.3 kWh or 81.4 kWh battery. For comparison, the EV3 with the same batteries has a range of 435 km and 604 km, respectively.

To keep the price low, Kia can equip the EV2 with only a smaller battery or use the 43.3 kWh battery from the PV5 (Hyundai’s electric van). In any case, the company is targeting a range of about 435 km, which is better than many competitors. For comparison, the Renault 4 has a range of about 400 km with a 52 kWh battery.

Design and interior

The Kia EV2 concept is designed in accordance with the Opposites United design philosophy. The car has smooth body surfaces and unique front lighting technology. The front running lights are located next to the main headlights, and the taillights are quite low and have a rounded shape, which distinguishes them from other Kia models.

Inside the EV2, you can expect a combined digital instrument cluster and multimedia system that takes up a large portion of the front panel – similar to the EV3. However, some elements of the concept, such as the reclining front seats or the rear hinged doors, are unlikely to appear in the production version.

Changing Kia’s strategy

The launch of the EV2 marks Kia’s transition from producing premium electric vehicles for first-time buyers (EV6, EV9) to the mass market. The company’s president, Ho Sung-sung, emphasized Kia’s commitment to making electrification a daily occurrence and making electric cars accessible to a wider audience.

If Kia can maintain a competitive price and the promised range, the EV2 will have every chance of taking its rightful place among low-cost electric vehicles.
