The Minecraft film adaptation exceeded forecasts by almost two times and opened at the box office with a record $301 million — the highest-grossing start of 2025 and the second-best debut in video game history, second only to last year’s «Super Mario Brothers in the movies» from with a start of $377 million and a total box office of $1.3 billion
Slightly less than half, $144.1 million, came from international distribution, while $157 million came from «domestic» in North America. The largest foreign markets for the film were the United Kingdom ($19.9 million), China ($14.5 million), Mexico ($11.2 million), and Germany ($10.6 million). It is noteworthy that Minecraft has become one of the few new Hollywood blockbusters that did not fail in China, and has already been named the most popular «non-local» movie of 2025, as well as the highest-grossing video game adaptation in the country in the last five years, surpassing «Sonic the Hedgehog» and «Super Mario Brothers in the Movies».
Directed by Jared Hess, the story follows four misfits who find themselves transported through a portal into a cubic world and are forced to save it with the help of the game’s main character, Steve. Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Daniel Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge take on the lead roles.
Interestingly, Minecraft has received rather mediocre ratings and reviews from critics — on Rotten Tomatoes, its was rated by 47% with a verdict of «a silly movie for children or very avid gamers» — whereas the viewer’s assessment stood at 87% based on 5000+ reviews. The rating of the movie on IMDb reached 6.2/10 based on 29 thousand reviews.
The situation with Disney’s remake of «Snow White» is different: the film earned $77 million domestically and $168 million worldwide. Given the budget, which according to some estimates exceeded $350 million, the film is a serious contender for the title of one of the biggest box office failures of the year.
From the very beginning of its production, «Snow White» was haunted by scandalous headlines —from casting criticism or the choice of visual effects for Rachel Zegler’s statements and her potential conflict with her co-star Gal Gadot, who played the evil stepmother. In the end, after the premiere grades have fallen to a catastrophic levelAnd now it’s hard to distinguish between a real reaction to the movie and the effects of review bombing (for example,on IMDb, where the rating of «Snow White» fell to 1.6 out of 10, addednote on unusual activity).
All of this seems to have forced Disney to reconsider its strategy of releasing remakes — at least one of the next ones, dedicated to Rapunzel, has been postponed indefinitely.
