«Netflix’s The Chronicles of Narnia will make Aslan a woman, Meryl Streep is offered the role

Meryl Streep is in talks to play Aslan in Netflix’s adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia. Yes, you read that right.

In the books of C.S. Lewis, Aslan — is a powerful and wise Lion who is the creator and guardian of Narnia. The writer created him as an allegory of Jesus and depicted him as a male creature. In previous adaptations, this image was followed until Netflix took over.

According to the report DeadlineMeryl Streep is currently negotiating the voice of Aslan, so there is every reason to believe that the streaming service has decided to offer a «unconventional» view of the character.

Netflix is expected to adapt all seven stories in the «The Chronicles of Narnia» series, starting with «The Sorcerer’s Nephew» — a prequel to «The Lion, the White Witch and the Wardrobe», which tells the story of the founding of Narnia and the adventures of two children, Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer.

None of the actors has been officially announced yet, but if we take into account other rumors, then Daniel Craig may play Uncle Digory, а singer Charli XCX — Jarvis, the young White Witch, portrayed in the previous films by Tilda Swinton.

Netflix first announced the creation of a new series of films based on the books by C.S. Lewis in 2018, and in 2022, they introduced the director — author of the hit «Barbie» Greta Gerwig, who will direct at least two films. The new «The Chronicles of Narnia» will get an exclusive a two-week run in Imax before debuting on Netflix, and the premiere of the first film is tentatively scheduled for Thanksgiving 2026.

The story of Narnia has been adapted into films many times: it all started with the 1979 animated series and continued with the trilogy of «live-action» films from 2005-2010, which earned a total of $1.5 billion at the box office. A fourth film, based on the novel «The Silver Chair», was also planned, but due to the loss of rights, it was canceled.
