OpenAI has launched GPT-4.5, but with limited access

OpenAI presented GPT-4.5 is the largest AI text chat model to date, which is currently available with limitations in a trial version, but will be made available to the public soon.

GPT-4.5, formerly known as Orion, is a continuation of the GPT-4o series, not o1 and o3-mini reasoning models. It was created by significantly increasing the amount of computing power and data during the «unsupervised learning» — phase, an approach that OpenAI used to develop GPT-4, GPT-3, GPT-2, and GPT-1.

In each of the generations, this approach has led to significant performance leaps in a variety of areas, including math, writing, and coding. Indeed, OpenAI says that the increased size of GPT-4.5 gave it «deeper world knowledge» and «higher emotional intelligence». Although there are now signs that the benefits of increased data and computation are starting to be offset: on several tests, GPT-4.5 is inferior to newer «reasoning» models from China’s DeepSeek, Anthropic, and OpenAI itself, notes TechCrunch.

At the same time, users preferred GPT-4.5 to GPT-4o in 57% of cases; the model also showed fewer «hallucinations» (37.1% vs. 61.8% for GPT-4o) and better answers to factual questions. On the downside, the model does not currently support some important multimodal features, such as voice mode.

Right now, only ChatGPT Pro subscribers ($200/month) can try out GPT-4.5, because OpenAI faced a «shortage of GPUs». The situation is expected to be resolved in the coming days, and access to Plus and Team subscribers is planned to be provided next week.

Developers can access GPT-4.5 through the API, but the price is significantly higher than its predecessor — $75 per million incoming tokens (about 750,000 words) and $150 per million outgoing tokens (GPT-4o had $2.5 and $10, respectively).

With this in mind, OpenAI «evaluates» whether it is worth maintaining the API for GPT-4.5 in the long term.

«We’re making GPT-4.5 available in a trial version to better understand its strengths and limitations», — says the OpenAI blog post. «We’re still exploring what it can do and want to see how people use it — perhaps in ways we didn’t expect».
