Samsung added Seamless Updates to Galaxy S25: what does it mean for users?

It took Samsung almost 10 years to add support for Android Seamless Updates to its flagship smartphone lineup. It has finally become available in the new Galaxy S25 series.

The Seamless Updates feature debuted in 2016 as part of Android Nougat and has been used on Google Pixel devices ever since. Over time, this feature appeared in devices of many other brands. But Samsung refused to implement it for a long time.

The situation finally began to change in early 2024, when Samsung released its first Galaxy device with Seamless Updates. The Galaxy A55 debuted with support for this feature, but Samsung didn’t continue this trend with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 released later that year. Now, the company seems to be starting a widespread rollout of Seamless Updates in the Galaxy S25.

On our Galaxy S25 Ultra, Seamless Updates is directly supported at the system level. Now we’ll have to wait and see how Seamless Updates will work on this device.

On the Galaxy A55, updates are downloaded and installed in the background and then applied after a reboot. Previously, updates had to be downloaded first, then the phone would reboot to the installation screen, which could take several minutes before later being fully powered back on with the new version. Seamless Updates leave the phone fully operational while the update is installed, and only a quick reboot is required to complete the installation.

In addition to the usability improvements that come with Seamless Updates, the nature of the A/B split method also allows Android to revert to a stable software build if something goes wrong with a new update, although this is extremely rare.
