«Something from the PlayStation 2 era»: an early version of the Minecraft movie without CGI «leaked» to the Internet

A draft version of the Minecraft «adaptation was leaked» on the Internet just before the release — the copyright holders removed most of the footage after the leak, but some is still actively circulating on social media.

The early version offers many scenes with unfinished visual effects — website Eurogamer compares the footage to PlayStation 2-era games that look funnier and «cubed» than the movie itself. One clip shows Steve (Jack Black) dancing with some blurry hand-drawn pandas and cows, while another shows a strange aerial race with a dangerous fall at the end.

In general, the footage looks more like a bad PhotoShop job than any close to finished version of a movie hit that claims to earn $1 billion. Although the reactions to the draft version are mostly positive: some people wrote that they wouldn’t mind paying to see it.

Minecraft is based on the game of the same name, developed and published by Mojang Studios in 2011, and tells the story of a group of misfits (Jason Momoa, Daniel Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen) who suddenly find themselves in a game world and have to complete a series of tasks to save it and get home. Accompanying them in this is the character Steve, played by Jack Black (although he used to play the role of a talking pig).

The film received rather mediocre ratings and reviews from critics —48% on Rotten Tomatoes with a verdict of «silly movie for children or very avid gamers»but this did not prevent him from earning a whopping $301 million in the first weekend of release Meanwhile, the film’s creative team, led by director Jared Hess, is already discussing a potential sequel.

«We had a lot of fun making this movie. The game offers such a big world and so many things that we haven’t covered yet. I’d love to make a sequel, and there seems to be talk of that already, so I’m very excited», — Hess said in a commentary Deadline.
