EW magazine published the first official footage «Mortal Kombat 2» — of Simon McQuaid’s fantasy martial arts movie based on the game of the same name.
The 2021 movie finale showed where the franchise will go next — Hollywood. That’s where Cole Young (Lewis Tan), a descendant of Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpio (Hiroyuki Sanada), went to find one of the fighters chosen for the army, action star Johnny Cage. The eccentric, and well-known from the games (and past film adaptations) character Urban has already teased on the poster of the fictional movie Uncaged Furyand now it has fully taken its place in the official images.
«Finally, you get to see Johnny Cage,» says Mortal Kombat co-creator and head of game developer NetherRealm Studios Ed Boon. «His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores. He’s a lost Hollywood guy who’s caught up in this magical, extremely violent thing. His portrayal of Johnny Cage is in some ways different from our games. He adds his own sparkle to it, but I think it will be fresh. There’s kind of a» novelty factor here.
EW also showed footage of Hiroyuki Sanada with «Shogun» as Scorpio and «newcomers» Kitana (Adeline Rudolph) and Shao Kahn (Martin Ford). As a bonus, new character skins will be available in Mortal Kombat 1 later this year.
The confirmed cast list for «Mortal Kombat 2» also includes Damon Herriman (Kuan Chi), Josh Lawson, and Max Huang — although the characters of the latter two actors, Kano and Kung Lao, died in the previous movie.
«I can tell you that Josh Lawson is not playing Kano’s twin,» Boone says, pointing to the existing Mortal Kombat history from the video games that makes such a return possible. «We killed a few characters in Mortal Kombat 1. So we’re dealing with spirits, NetherRealm, and things like that. There are ways to bring back dead characters».
The world premiere of «Mortal Kombat 2» is scheduled for October 24.
