After the favorable first reactions to the Minecraft movie adaptation it seemed that the film was going to get high marks from critics, but they were quite disappointing.
Presently, the film has a modest 52% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 46 reviews. Critics call the plot ridiculous and intended exclusively for children (or very avid gamers), but praise the duo of Jack Black and Jason Momoa, who have demonstrated successful comedic performances.
- «The Minecraft Movie — is extremely silly, intended for young children and avid gamers. Ridiculous characters, a ridiculous plot, and boring musical numbers will be overwhelming for most adults», — Julian Roman, MovieWeb.
- «A new low for modern video game adaptations, as this one is very unfunny and just plain ugly to look at with weird CGI», — Ryan Guar, Discussing Film.
- «The creators of the Minecraft movie know their audience and ruthlessly target them with fanservice and a lot of farce. For the rest of us, it’s just a journey through a colorful digital background», — Michael Ordogna, The Wrap.
- «If Minecraft — is a game in which children express their creativity by building new digital worlds full of tunnels and fortresses, then in the film adaptation this creativity dies», — Radheyan Simonpillai,
Globe and Mail. - «While this movie looks like a chaotic mess that only focuses on Jack Black and Jason Momoa being funny (and clearly having fun doing it), it wasn’t made for me. My kids, who love Minecraft, had the best time, which is exactly what the studio intended», — Tessa Smith
Mama’s Geeky.
Similar sentiments are demonstrated by the rating on IMDb, which was 6.2/10 based on 1.5 thousand reviews, as well as a score on Metacritic, which did not exceed 50 points out of a total of 100.
Minecraft is based on the game of the same name, developed and published by Mojang Studios in 2011, and tells the story of a group of misfits (Jason Momoa, Daniel Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen) who suddenly find themselves in a game world and have to complete a series of tasks to save it and get home. Accompanying them in this is the character Steve, played by Jack Black (although he used to play the role of a talking pig).
The Minecraft movie will be released in Ukrainian cinemas starting today, April 3.
Interestingly, despite the dubious ratings, experts call the movie «a potential gold mine» for Warner Bros.and forecasts a worldwide box office opening of $140 million.
