A Chinese woman suffered burns when her Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max exploded. It happened in the morning while the woman was still sleeping and the iPhone was charging.
According to Shanxi Radio and Television, the incident occurred around 6:30 am. The victim turned in her sleep, her hand touched the flames, which caused pain and burns. She woke up amidst smoke and fire.
The aftermath, captured on video, showed extensive damage: her bedding was burnt, the walls of her apartment were blackened by smoke, and her iPhone was burned. A preliminary investigation pointed to a faulty battery as the likely cause. This case highlights the dangers of charging devices unattended, especially when they are placed near flammable objects and a sleeping person.
The woman purchased an Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max in 2022, and it was no longer covered by the warranty. However, the owner of the phone wants to find answers about the cause of the explosion and hopes to receive compensation, given the injuries she suffered and the damage to her rented apartment.
Apple’s customer service team expressed concern about the incident. The company stated that regardless of the warranty status of the Apple device, it will be necessary to take the phone for analysis to understand the cause of the malfunction.
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Apple emphasized its commitment to investigate any potential security threats associated with the company’s products. However, it is unclear whether the phone had an original Apple battery or had undergone a previous repair that could have compromised its integrity.
