Autopilot crashes Xiaomi SU7 due to unexpected lane change at high speed

Xiaomi has expressed «deep regret» over the crash of its SU7 electric car that killed three people in China. Before the incident, the car’s automatic driving function was activated. The company has pledged to cooperate with the police investigating the incident.

The debut Xiaomi SU7 electric car has become a real hit is still on the waiting list in China almost a year after its release. This time, however, this model made headlines in the Chinese media for an unpleasant reason. The car was involved in an accident on a highway in Tongling, Anhui province, and then caught fire. Three passengers were killed in the incident.

The accident occurred on March 29, 2025. The car was reportedly a standard version of the Xiaomi SU7. Before the accident, it was activated in the Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) mode. At one point, it reached speeds of up to 116 km/h.

The driver regained control of the car seconds before the accident, which occurred at a speed of about 97 km/h after colliding with a guardrail on the road. At the time of the accident, the highway was undergoing repair work, which likely caused an unexpected lane change.

At this point, there is no final confirmation of the connection between the NOA system and the accident. At the same time, Xiaomi has provided investigators with data on the car’s control system and traffic information.

The company’s shares suffered losses due to this incident. Their value on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange dropped from HKD 51 on March 28, 2025 to HKD 44.55 at the time of writing.

This news may be particularly unfortunate for the company, which is preparing to release its the second electric car YU7 this year.
