
OpenAI is growing its ChatGPT subscriber base at an extremely fast pace. Since the beginning of the year, it has added 4.5 million users. The growth can be compared to a rocket.
The Information reports that the company is now generating at least $415 million in revenue per month, excluding enterprise plans and the new Pro plan ($200 per month), which means it has annual revenue of $5 billion. This is an almost 30% increase from $333 million in revenue per month and $3.7 billion last year. At the end of last year, the AI developer reported 15.5 million subscribers.
In addition, OpenAI receives revenue from numerous developers and platforms that use its models through APIs. It is known that in 2023, the API business will generate about $2 billion in revenue. If the growth continues, OpenAI’s likely projected revenue could be around $12.7 billion per year. According to Bloomberg, OpenAI has plans for $29.4 billion in 2026.
Despite the rapid growth in the number of users, the percentage of paid users has slightly decreased from 5% three months ago to 4% now. OpenAI boasts 500 million weekly active users — 43% more than 350 million at the end of last year.
OpenAI says that significant funds are needed to support users, including free users. The company plans to raise $40 billion in investment with an estimated value of $260 billion. Interestingly, OpenAI is currently operating at a loss, but expects to be profitable in five years.
OpenAI’s growth is driven by quality products, although are still prone to inventing and «hallucinations» ChatGPT is very popular and in demand, and the new GPT-4o image generator went viral online.
