First NVIDIA RTX 5090 and 5090D graphics cards become «brick» with new driver

It appears that NVIDIA RTX 5090 and 5090D users have not only been challenged by the high cost and inability to purchase video cards. Moreover, they don’t work.

Judging by the influx of reports, the users who are having problems are RTX 5090D — a Chinese variant in which artificial intelligence calculations are suppressed without sacrificing gaming performance. But there are also reports of cases with regular RTX 5090s. The problem is that the video cards are not recognized by computers and do not initialize, that is, they do not work whatsoever.

On Chinese forums and social media Chiphell, Baidu and Bilibili, there have been quite a few reports of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090D malfunctions. They refer to video cards from Colorful and Manli, and there is also evidence of Gigabyte RTX 5090D. According to the victims, the issue does not occur immediately, but after installing the latest drivers. After installing them, the screen goes black and the video card does not show «life» signs.

«The latest news is that a recently purchased 5090D became a brick after a driver update. The owner overpaid 6000 yuan for the first Renaissance 5090D Starship to get it. After installing the drivers, it could not be recognized and was sent for a refund. There are more similar situations. Please be careful when buying the first batch of 5090», — writes a Baidu user.

Store employee Goofish writes that all RTX 5090 and RTX 5090D graphics cards have a similar issue, and there is a high probability of them failing with the latest driver. There is a possibility of damage to the GPU, and several cases of chips burning out have been reported.

«The first RTX 5090s are becoming «bricks». Don’t rush to buy 5090s second-hand. All 5090s explode (this is how the English translation reads, — ed.), the processors may be burning out. Even before logging in, the video cards are not recognized in the BIOS. … It looks like a driver issue — they become «bricks» after installing it. … Updated: original 5090s also «explode», — one of the messages says.

It appears that the problem is not limited to the 5090D variant. In the subreddit r/ASUS RTX 5090 user could not recognize the BIOS card. He tried cleaning the CMOS, but that didn’t work either. Some people suggest that it could have worked replacement of PCIe from 5.0 to 4.0 as in the recent an experiment with less severe consequences. There is no decision or reaction from NVIDIA or manufacturers yet.
