James Gunn and Peter Szafran have revealed a six-year plan for the DCU — the rebooted DC Cinematic Universe that will begin with «Superman» and include a «big Avengers»-like event, reports Kotaku.
We would like to remind you that the duo took control of DC’s film and gaming properties in 2023 and was supposed to relaunch Zack Snyder’s «messy» works into a structured franchise with projects of different genres. According to Hahn, the main goal in this case is to make all the films and series seem independent — and not require «homework», i.e. watching other projects before the new one comes out.
«We remain committed to each title working as a separate project», — said DC Studios at a press conference (via The Hollywood Reporter) Ann. «So you can watch Superman or Lantern without having to watch each one separately. Although, of course, there will be some interesting things from past works».
The DCU’s six-year plans include two «live-action» movies per year, two series and two animated shows, some of which will be created exclusively for WB Discovery Max, while the series will end with a major crossover like «Avengers: Endgame», although the duo did not provide any details for the project. Actually, Gunn has a great experience of such work, as he was still working as an executive producer for Marvel at the time of the Russo brothers’ movie.
The plans are ambitious, and Gunn and Safran want to make sure that each film has a solid script before production begins, so they are in no hurry to make big announcements. For now, we know for sure what will be released «Superman», «Supergirl», series «Lanterns» (before that, the universe was discovered animated «Commando Monsters») and «Batman», which has no script yet; we also received more or less sane news about the film adaptation of Clayface, but that seems to be all.
Recall that «Superman», starring newcomer David Corensworth, has already received first trailer and short teaser and a premiere date set for July 10, 2025. DC has also already started filming and has offered a first look at «Supergirl» in the embodiment of Milly Alcock from «House of Dragon».
Marvel, meanwhile, has been working on the new version of «Avengers» in two movies and — are rumored to start filming next month and will run «parallel to», although the latter doesn’t seem to have a completed script yet. Robert Downey Jr will return to the MCU, but as a villain, while the elite team of superheroes will be made up of «Fantastic Four» and the new Captain America Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).
