Johnny Depp to play Satan in Terry Gilliam’s movie «The Carnival at the End of Days»

At the Rome Film Festival, Johnny Depp spoke about his role in Terry Gilliam’s «The Carnival at the End of Days». The director finally found the funds for the project.

Depp received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the festival. He also showed his second directorial film «Modi», which premiered in San Sebastian in September. Here’s what he says about the role:

«You won’t get rid of me so soon. As an actor, I hope to play Satan in a movie directed by Terry Gilliam. I hope the movie will be released».

In May, Gilliam said that found financing for «Carnival». It is known that Depp will indeed play Satan, and Jeff Bridges, Adam Driver and Jason Momoa will join the cast. It is known that filming will start in 2025.

But given the director’s history, it is not surprising that in five months Terry Gilliam said Czech publishing house that it did not have enough money to make «Carnival», and that it would have to compromise its own vision for the film to happen.

«I don’t have all the money for this right now. I would have to give up some of my ideas, which I don’t want to do. I’m angry with myself that I can’t do it. Which is not always a bad thing. When I’m angry, I come up with some interesting ideas… Maybe I’ll start filming soon, albeit with a smaller budget».

The director adds that «is in talks with the Saudis» to finance the project. He is ready to shoot «Carnival» in Saudi Arabia if it means financing. However, investors are most interested in Depp’s participation. Gilliam said that the budget of «Carnival» should have been about $30 million.

The director’s last film — «The Man Who Killed Don Quixote» (2018) is a twenty-year old film. The lack of commercial success of «Don Quixote», as well as the critical acclaim, is one of the reasons for the lack of funding for Terry Gilliam’s projects.
