Lenovo unveils Legion Go S — first third-party console with SteamOS

At CES 2025, Lenovo showcased three new portable consoles powered by AMD Z1 Extreme or the new Ryzen Z2 processors. The Legion Go S can run on either Windows 11 or SteamOS.

In this model, Lenovo has abandoned the detachable controllers of the first Legion Go in favor of a lighter device (740 g). The white model operates under Windows 11, while the Nebula Violet version runs on Valve’s SteamOS. Officially, they are named Legion Go S and Legion Go S – Powered by SteamOS.

The consoles are equipped with an 8” touchscreen LCD with a resolution of 1920×1200 (500 nits / 120 Hz), a 55.5 Wh battery, up to 32 GB of DDR5 6400 RAM, and a 1 TB storage drive. Users who need more space for games can install any standard 2280 M.2 SSD. The console includes a MicroSD slot, two USB 4.0 ports on the top, and an audio jack.

Lenovo will release the most affordable Legion Go S Powered by SteamOS in May 2025 at a price of $500 with an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor. The Windows-operated console will be available in January, priced at $729.99 for the version with a Z2 Go processor, 32 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB SSD. For $600, one can purchase the Legion Go S with Windows or Steam with the Z2 Go chip, 16 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB SSD.

The company also showcased the next-generation portable console, Legion Go 2. It features detachable controllers (including a sensor that allows transforming the right joystick into a gaming mouse). The console’s controller edges are rounded, and the D-pad is circular. Compared to its predecessor, the battery has been increased from 49.2 Wh to 74 Wh.

As before, the display measures 8.8” and 144 Hz, but this time it is OLED. Lenovo has reduced the resolution from 2560×1600 to a more sensible 1920×1200. The display offers a brightness of 500 nits and supports variable refresh rates. The second-generation Lenovo Legion Go will come with a Ryzen Z2, up to 2 TB storage, and 32 GB of fast 7500 MHz RAM. The console will appear in 2025, with more detailed information about the release time, cost, and specifications not yet disclosed.
