NVIDIA introduced DLSS 4 with Multi Frame Generation — three additional frames from one, only for RTX 50xx

The fourth generation of NVIDIA Deep Learning Super Sampling technology 4 (DLSS 4) provides an 8x performance increase in games through Multi-Frame Generation, exclusively for RTX 50xx.

DLSS 4 enhances algorithms and AI models across all RTX video cards. However, the newly introduced NVIDIA RTX 50xx will generate not just one, but three frames ahead with minimal delay, thanks to the updated Reflex 2 technology (which is not exclusive to RTX 50xx). Thus, all NVIDIA RTX will receive improvements, but the Blackwell video cards will benefit the most.

The technology relies on generative artificial intelligence to predict up to three frames ahead of a single regular frame, which may also result in increased resolution. As DLSS SR can effectively scale 1 pixel to 4 (i.e., converting 1080p rendering into 4K output), and DLSS 4 generates the next three frames, DLSS 4 actually has a pixel generation ratio of 1:15 (15 out of every 16 pixels are generated outside the rendering pipeline).

Previous generations of video cards will not receive additional frames and the corresponding performance boost. For the RTX 40xx series, this means generating only one previous frame, while the RTX 20xx series does not support generation at all. For the latest video cards, DLSS 4 promises a significant performance increase — up to 8 times. It seems that 4K 240 Hz monitors will become more popular.

At launch, DLSS 4 will support 75 games. Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Star Wars Outlaws will receive compatibility with DLSS Multi-Frame Generation following the release of the GeForce RTX 50xx series. Black Myth: Wukong, NARAKA: BLADEPOINT, Marvel Rivals, and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will add support later, while Black State, DOOM: The Dark Ages, and Dune: Awakening will support the technology from their launch.
