Some Sapphire Radeon RX 9070s have cushioning material under the shroud — this must be removed to avoid burning the video card

If you bought a Sapphire Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT — don’t rush to connect it to your PC right out of the box. There is a nuance that can be costly.

You need to make sure that there are no shock-absorbing pads between the cooling system shroud and the radiator fins, as shown in the photo below. This is true at least for the Sapphire Pure Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming OC, Pulse Radeon RX 9070 XT Gaming, and Pure Radeon RX 9070 Gaming OC.

About Sapphire Japan published in X a reference to post distributor’s support service Ask Corporation about the problem. The manufacturer has apologized to customers:

«We apologize for the inconvenience, but we would like to inform you about the cushioning material in the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT».

The distributor explains in a news release:

«We would like to inform you that the protective cushioning material (sponge) that is attached to the product during shipment must be removed before using the product. Using the product without removing the cushioning material may result in poorer cooling or product failure, so be sure to remove the cushioning material before installing it on your PC».

The problem is that this part can be easily overlooked and not removed. Also, it’s covered by a casing — owners will naturally be wary of voiding the warranty. Ask Corp explains how to remove the unnecessary material:

«There is a protective cushioning material in the heatsink area on the back of the product, so remove it from the area marked with the red box in the image or by pressing it in the direction of the arrow. Be careful not to try to cut it with a cutter or screwdriver, as this could damage the product. If you are unable to remove it, peel off the sticker on top and remove it through the slit formed by removing the screws marked with a yellow».

Sapphire Japan explained that the warranty will not be affected by these manipulations. She also notes that some Sapphire NITRO+ video cards There is also a similar material. But it is needed to protect the cables, and the company warns against removing it.
