Sony released PlayStation Portal update, which puts the PS5 accessory in a different class. However, it is not free.
The device PlayStation Portal allows PS5 owners to stream games from their console to a small 1080p screen so they don’t have to take up the TV, play in bed, etc. With the update, Portal «has untethered itself from the PS5 and has effectively become a portable cloud console. But in addition to buying the device itself, you will need another purchase — a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. The owner of both will be able to play «selected PS5 games» from the PS Plus game catalog via the cloud, even without a PS5.
Cloud Streaming is currently in beta. Features available during the test period may change over time and may be different in the final version. Sony currently offers the following features:
- Cloud access to more than 120 games from the PlayStation Plus catalog in 1080p/60fps resolution, including Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
- Up to 100 GB of cloud storage for saving data and game progress, with automatic synchronization between portable and conventional consoles.
The following conditions are required to start the cloud mode:
- Active PlayStation Plus Premium membership
- Access to broadband Internet via Wi-Fi
- Minimum 7 Mbps for 720p streaming
- Minimum 13 Mbps for 1080p streaming
Trial versions of games, the ability to stream games purchased from the PS Store, system features such as Party voice chat and game invites for select games, the «Create» button, 3D audio, and in-game commerce — all are not yet available in the «initial stages of public access».
As soon as the beta version is available, it can be accessed via Quick Menu > Settings > Cloud Streaming (Beta). In addition to cloud streaming, the latest update to Sony PlayStation Portal offers various «audio enhancements» as described on the PlayStation blog.
