Useful bitcoin: mining will heat the homes of 80,000 people in Finland

Mining consumes a lot of electricity and is accompanied by equipment heating. This holiday season, Bitcoin will be heating an additional 67,000 Finnish homes — it’s not the first project of its kind in the country.

The US company MARA is expanding its heating capabilities in Finland. In June, Marathon Digital Holdings with a market cap of about $7 billion announced the launch of a pilot project to supply heat to about 11,000 residents of the Finnish region of Satakunta using a 2 MW mining center. MARA is the second public entity in terms of the main cryptocurrency reserves — holding over 44,000 bitcoins.

This winter holiday season, the company is launching a heating project for a city in Finland with 67,000 residents. How this number together with 11,000 makes up 80,000 is not disclosed, but that is the statement.

“This holiday season, we’re excited to bring the gift of warmth to even more homes with the addition of our second district heating project warming a city of 67,000 residents with Bitcoin mining. We now proudly provide heat to nearly 80,000 residents across Finland.”

In this northern country, it’s quite cold in winter, so major miners are paying attention to the useful utilization of heat. In April, the Finnish company Hashlabs Mining reported on its project for home heating. It’s worth noting that power stations themselves can heat the surrounding area by cooling their systems, and their electricity can be used for other purposes. However, if Bitcoin is already being mined, why not utilize the heat. The power for mining operations accounts for 3% of electricity consumption in Europe.
