Baldur’s Gate 3 receives final game patch — 12 new classes, mod support and crossplay (+ trailer)

Baldur’s Gate 3 has received a major Patch 8, which will be the final game (not including bug fixes).

This update includes tested in closed mode for a long time, but now it is available to everyone. Larian announced its preparation in November 2024, and now it’s finally out — with new features, balance, and a few important changes.

«Outside of minor bug fixing, Patch 8 will be the last game patch to introduce new content. That means we won’t be adding any new narrative content or significant changes to storylines, Origin characters, or companions», — the developers say.

The patch brings full cross play, support for Steam collectible cards, photo mode, new subclasses for all classes, and major improvements for modders. In general, the update affected the game’s key systems.

New classes and subclasses

Each class in the game got a new subclass: with new animations, abilities, effects, and even voice acting. For example, the Paladin of the Oath of the Crowns has a Knight of the Oathbreaker — with a unique voice and abilities. Other new items include:

  • Path of the Giant Barbarian
  • College of Glamour Bard
  • Death Domain Cleric
  • Circle of Stars Druid
  • Arcane Archer Fighter
  • Way of the Drunken Master Monk
  • Oath of the Crown Paladin
  • Swarmkeeper Ranger
  • Swashbuckler Rogue
  • Shadow Magic Sorcerer
  • Hexblade Warlock
  • Bladesinging Wizard (without specifying a subclass, but with new features)

The choice of subclass depends on the level: for example, Paladins or Sorcerers can choose it at the first level. But this is not the case with all characters: Barbarians or Monks — only from the third level.

Cross play and mod support

Along with the patch, the Baldur’s Gate 3 Toolkit — the official set of tools for creating mods has been updated. Authors can make changes partially (partial level editing): add objects, change properties of things, create custom NPCs, etc. However, the tools have limitations, for example, you can’t officially change the geometry of the world or a building.

At the same time, there is now full support for cross play and synchronization of progress between platforms. Through the Larian Network, players can create shared lobbies even if they play on different devices. Mods also work in cross-play, but there is a nuance: everyone in the lobby must have the same version of the mod. Otherwise, you won’t be able to join the game — the system will check for compatibility and ask you to install, uninstall, or update the necessary mods.

For your convenience, we added the «Available on console and Mac» — tag to PC, making it easier to find mods that work not only on Windows. It’s worth remembering that consoles have a limit of 100 mods, and third-party mods are not supported there.

To create a crossplay lobby, you need to:

In addition, Baldur’s Gate 3 now supports Steam cards. Players can now collect them, create badges, unlock new backgrounds and emojis for their profile. In addition, the game can be purchased with a 20% discount until April 21.

The final patch has other updates, but they are mostly bug fixes. The full list can be found here at the link. It’s no surprise that Larian Studios decided to make the 8th patch the final one, as it needs time for two new role-playing projects outside the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Larian doesn’t plan to stop with Baldur’s Gate 3, which the studio’s revenue grew almost 20 times.
