Commandos: Origins is back with a new installment, but the continuation of the cult series was met with more negative than positive feedback.
Commandos: Origins offers players a fascinating story, where the key roles belong to Jack O’Hara («Green Beret») and Francis T. Woolridge (sniper). In the game, the characters will travel to real places from the Second World War, immersing themselves in dangerous adventures. Players will be able to complete missions in such unique locations as the snowy Arctic, a German submarine under the cover of night, and the hot desert of Africa.
The story takes place during the Second World War, when the legendary Commandos team first appears on the scene. The franchise began with the release of Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines in 1998, and a year later it was expanded with Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty. The sequels to the series were released in 2003 and 2006, and HD remasters were presented in 2022.
As for the community’s reaction… Well, Claymore Game Studios director Jürgen Reuswig says «Mission accomplished» — players respond «unfinished, unoptimized, unpolished, and not ready for release». The project received 66% of positive reviews on Steam. Most of the complaints are that the game was not finalized before release.
«The performance is bad on a pc that should be crushing it, constant stutters and framedrops, horrible blur and ghosting when moving the camera, even with upscaling off and motion blur off. Can’t recommend this game at this state, very rough», — the user writes.
Someone shared their experience of running the game for 20 minutes — a total of 10 errors that broke the gameplay. Origins has choppy character animations and an unstable frame rate. Players also complained about a control error when the cursor is moved a few centimeters and the character goes in the other direction.
«The game makes me feel like I want to go back to my childhood summer and play Commandos with my dad. But my dad isn’t there», — they add in the Steam reviews.
It is not surprising that users were so outraged by the launch of «raw» Commandos — the series was very popular and eagerly awaited by fans. Last year, the creators of showed a demo version together with trailer.
In general, Commandos: Origins is now available on PC and all current consoles, including Xbox Game Pass. Physical copies of the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will be available on May 22 — so far only in some regions. The developers promise versions for Xbox One and PS4 later this year.
