The OpenAI head commented on the viral trend of ChatGPT images in the style of the Ghibli animation studio. The GPT-4o image generator has been postponed due to the influx of users.
Sam Altman wittily reacted to the new trend: users are massively creating images in the style of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli using a new generator built into GPT-4o and ChatGPT. Altman even changed his avatar in X to an image in this style.
>be me
>grind for a decade trying to help make superintelligence to cure cancer or whatever
>mostly no one cares for first 7.5 years, then for 2.5 years everyone hates you for everything
>wake up one day to hundreds of messages: “look i made you into a twink ghibli style haha”— Sam Altman (@sama) March 26, 2025

The new image generator is considered by many to be truly remarkable. It qualitatively recycles existing images in many styles, reproduces text well, and follows prompts accurately. Hayao Miyazaki himself has not yet reacted to the trend, but in the past he spoke out against the use of AI to create images and animations.
Sam Altman’s other post on X is not as cheerful, and probably won’t appeal to many people. He talks about the postponement of the new image generator for free users for an indefinite period.
images in chatgpt are wayyyy more popular than we expected (and we had pretty high expectations).
rollout to our free tier is unfortunately going to be delayed for awhile.

«ChatGPT images are much more popular than we expected (and we had quite high expectations). Unfortunately, the rollout to the free level will be postponed for some time».
On March 25, CEO of OpenAI shared with his impressions of the new image generation tool. He called it an incredible technology that was hard to believe and was excited about the creative outpouring it caused. Altman talks about the new level of creative freedom the tool provides, as well as its ability to «not create offensive things if you don’t want to».
