IGN portal published rating of the 25 best video games in the horror genre, where the cult Silent Hill 2 took the first place. The list also includes new titles, such as Alan Wake 2.
According to IGN journalists, Konami’s Silent Hill 2 (2001) is the best game that reveals the essence of true horror and its consequences. It is «a psychological journey into the world of the protagonist’s depressed thoughts and the tormented souls he meets on his way». The editorial team noted the masterful coverage of the themes of personal tragedy, guilt and cruelty.
«However, there’s something about the PS2 version that keeps us coming back to the slightly pixelated fog and unique atmosphere that haunts us. We can say that we have been seeing this troubled city in our dreams since we first set foot in it in 2001. 23 years later, nothing has gotten more terrifying», — IGN writes about Silent Hill 2.
The second place went to the remake of Resident Evil 2 which the editors also recognized as the best part of the series. The original 1998 game improved the formula of the horror genre: the locations became creepier, the enemies — more threatening, and with the appearance of the legendary monsters Lickers and Mr. X (Tyrant), the level of horror reached new heights. The adventures of Leon and Claire in Raccoon City have become a benchmark not only for the Resident Evil series, but for the entire genre.
Amnesia took the third place: The Dark Descent 2010, which «radically changed the survival-horror genre». The game tells the story of Daniel, who wakes up in a dark Brennenburg castle with no memories of the past. The main innovation of Amnesia was the complete absence of the possibility of fighting monsters — the player can only run away and hide in the dark. However, the developers have added a unique mechanism «sanity level»: being in the dark slowly drives the character crazy, so players have to balance between the need to hide from monsters and the need to maintain the character’s mental health.
