Netflix and Apple want to make a movie about Jason Bourne — Universal lost the rights

Universal has lost the rights to the Jason Bourne franchise, and Skydance, Apple, and Netflix have begun negotiations with Robert Ludlum’s estate to acquire them.

In fact, the franchise is getting a good chance to continue, but given that the rights may go to Netflix, the question arises: will Matt Damon return to the role? Or will the streaming service offer its own, more modern take on the character?

Damon himself has stated that he plans to return for «one more» movie in the «Bourne» franchise, while last year it was rumored that Edward Berger was considering taking on a new film called «The Bourne Dilemma» / The Bourne Dilemma. However, recent news suggests that the «project is more likely to be dead than alive.

The character of Jason Bourne, as a former CIA officer and professional assassin who has lost his memory, was born in the mind of novelist Robert Ludlum in the 1980s. At the same time, the first novel in the series «The Bourne Identity» debuted, which was brought to the screen by Matt Damon and director Doug Liman two decades later. The movie was released a few years before Daniel Craig reimagined James Bond in «Casino Royale»and ushered in a new era of spy films that favored realism over high technology.

Two sequels, «The Bourne Ultimatum» and «The Bourne Supremacy», were released in 2004 and 2007, respectively, but Universal then introduced Jeremy Renner to the franchise and failed with the spinoff «The Bourne Legacy». A few years later, Damon returned with «Jason Bourne», which earned $415 million worldwide, while the franchise’s total earnings exceeded $1.6 billion.
