An experienced IT quality control specialist who tells his story under the pseudonym Harrison «juggled» six remote jobs during the year and earned $470,000. His goal for the next year is $800,000, but how does he do it?
The fact is that Harrison, 50, has a separate team of 6-7 people who help him with all the tasks and get paid for it. He has been working in a similar way for five years: in 2023, for example, he had six remote jobs and earned about $470,000, andрafter paying its employees, received approximately $320,000.
«My person knows about all the updates, and they look like me,» Harrison says, noting that video meetings don’t usually require him to turn on the camera.
In 2024, Harrison already had nine positions and, according to preliminary estimates, earned more than $500,000 (he will know the exact amount after taxes), and his plans for 2025 already include a figure of $800,000, of which he plans to pay the team about $250,000 — his rate is about $25-30 per hour.
It all started with the pandemic
Juggling jobs is nothing new, but Harrison belongs to a distinct group of «overworked» workers who have figured out how to hire outside, possibly less experienced, professionals to do their own work. In fact, this trend has spread during the pandemic, when presence in offices has become unnecessary.
Harrison started «telecommuting in 2018 and immediately started working two jobs. With the onset of the pandemic, he got a third and a fourth — until the workload became unbearable and he started looking for help on a freelance platform. After a series of interviews, Harrison created a whole team and took on several more jobs, and his employees work from the United States, Canada, India, and Pakistan.
Harrison’s working day
The man attends work meetings and supervises the work of his team, devoting approximately 40 hours a week to this. At least four employees directly perform work tasks, while the fifth, his son-in-law, helps to manage and acts as his understudy in meetings.
«He’s out of work, so I can help him out,» Harrison says. «Probably the best thing I’ve ever done».
Harrison clarified that he is occasionally fired from his job or his contract is not renewed, so there are still two separate employees who apply for jobs on his behalf. However, in recent months, this has become increasingly difficult, given that many companies are are making louder announcements about returning to their offices.
Technical features of work
Harrison is a U.S. citizen, but he lives abroad most of the time and uses a VPN to prove he is in the United States. His outsourcing was made possible by using programs such as Zoom, TeamViewer, and UltraViewer, as well as giving his team remote access to their work computers.
The man says he tries to assign one employee to one job, but some work on two at the same time. As far as Harrison knows, none of his employers suspected him of juggling jobs. Looking to the future, he plans to continue working in this way for the foreseeable future, as he believes he does not have enough savings to retire.
