Apple to be fined for «anti-competitive» App Store — up to $38 billion under new EU law

Apple may soon become the first company in history to be fined for violating the EU’s new Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Sources Bloomberg reports that the company has come under the spotlight of the European Commission due to «anti-competitive rules» in the App Store. The exact amount of the fine has not yet been announced, but the DMA provides for a fine of up to 10% of the company’s annual global revenue for the first violation and up to 20% for the second.

As noted by The VergeGiven last year’s profits, the EU’s initial fine could reach $38 billion, and it could be announced as early as November.

As a reminder, in March, the EU imposed a fine of 1.84 billion euros on Apple following an investigation into Spotify’s complaint about developers’ restrictions on directing users to make purchases outside the App Store.

Apple also has pay EUR 13 billion in unpaid taxes to the EU (Tim Cook even allegedly called Donald Trump to complain about fines imposed on his company) and faces an investigation into the rules, introduced for alternative applications.
