4A Games has cleared up the confusion surrounding internal changes in the studio, and at the same time confirmed the development of a new Metro installment.
The news about the continuation of the franchise comes amid recent changes in the studio’s structure that are becoming less and less clear. Recently, 4A Games Ukraine allegedly renamed itself Reburn and started developing La Quimera, but then denied it. It appears that the different parts of 4A Games are not too aware of each other’s activities, as the developer has now actually confirmed the renaming. Studio explains confusion because part of the team works in Ukraine and the other part abroad:
«We are proudly Ukrainian in our roots, and in the majority of our diverse team. We make games from our offices in Kyiv and Sliema, as well as remotely, and even sometimes from the front line in Ukraine. We now have studios in two countries, but the majority of our team remain in Ukraine — roughly 150 out of about 200+. The rest work in Malta, or remotely», — the developers say.
An important detail in the announcement is that 4A Games developed Metro Exodus together with 4A Games Ukraine. After the game’s release, another studio was created under the leadership of 4A Games Limited.
«Once Metro Exodus and its DLC was released, we created another Kyiv studio under 4A Games Limited and welcomed roughly 50 more of our colleagues to continue on with us, while 4A Games Ukraine continued to pursue their own project La Quimera, as a completely separate entity and recently renamed themselves Reburn. We wish them every success», — they added in their message.
Currently, there is not much official information about the new Metro, but the main thing is clear — the game will be a direct sequel to Exodus. The series will remain with a dark atmosphere, as the franchise creator Dmitry Glukhovsky is working on the script again. The team that created Metro 2033, Last Light, and Exodus also joined the development.
«We are the team that created and built the Metro games you know and love. We’re still making the next Metro with Dmitry Glukhovsky, the same core founders, leadership, developers, and nearly 20 years experience on the series. We also have our other new IP project in the works. We’ll reveal more about both when we’re ready», — the developers stated.
In March, Metro 2033 celebrates its 15th birthday, and, as the developers hinted, they will show what they have been working on next. The release date is not yet known, but the fact that 4A Games has finally officially confirmed work on the game is a big step forward. Fans have been waiting for the sequel since 2019 when Metro Exodus was released. Fans got last year Metro Awakening — VR prequel created by the Dutch Vertigo Games. But it is more focused on virtual reality fans than the main audience of the series.
