Yevhenii compares the development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 to a marathon and explains why the team could not physically postpone the release.
The main problem with «S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: The Heart of Chernobyl», which caused a wave of criticism, was the technical state of the game. It was because of the shortcomings in the work and optimization that the project received negative user reviews on Steam and low ratings from some media outlets. However, GSC Game World could no longer postpone the release to fix all the bugs.
In an interview with Eurogamer (This is the edition that accused S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 of nationalism) Yevgeny GrigorievichCEO of GSC Game World expressed the opinion that another postponement of the release date could break the morale of the developers.
«It’s very difficult to explain your state of mind when you’re in a super-intense workflow for many months before a release, and you’re working beyond what you can normally do during a period of maximum stress,» Grigorovich said.
According to him, the team faced a difficult choice.
«You have no energy at all and you have to decide — is it worth running another marathon? And you just can’t say “yes, let’s do one more marathon” because you’re already broken. You’re so tired that you’ll just die if you say ‘let’s run an extra marathon’,» the studio head explained.
Even with the extra time to polish the game, he said, it was impossible to fix absolutely everything. With the end of the year and a key sales period approaching, the team decided to release S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 in the best possible condition at the time.
«We didn’t have the option to say “let’s do more”. We could only work until the release date and do the best we could,» Grigorovich added.
