Huawei has unveiled the first electric vehicle under its new Maextro brand. This luxury sedan, created in collaboration with Huawei and JAC, is designed to compete with leading players in the D+ class sedan segment, such as Mercedes-Maybach and Rolls-Royce.
The Huawei Maextro S800 is 5480 mm long, 2000 mm wide, 1536 mm high, and has a wheelbase of 3370 mm. According to Richard Yu, head of Huawei’s smart car division, this puts the S800 in the top 0.01% of cars in terms of size.
The exterior combines classic luxury with futuristic elements. The car will initially be available in two colors: purple and silver and traditional black. One of the most notable design features is the wheels, which the Chinese media compare to a “cake” or “pie”. This is significantly different from the multi-spoke designs commonly used in this segment and is reminiscent of rally wheels from OZ Racing or Ronal.
Rounded shapes are evident in the front grille, which, although vertical, is not as square as most luxury sedans. The lighting design is also distinctive. On the front, there are two LED light strips framing the main headlights and many small light sources that create a “Milky Way” effect. A similar design is used in the taillights and unique door handles.
The interior offers a “starry sky” roof and two individual rear seats. Spy photos indicate the presence of three screens on the front panel. The thick middle pillar probably adds to the safety and strength of the structure.
Although there is still little precise data on the car’s functionality, Huawei promises a whole set of “super” features, including: Super Cruise, Super Maneuverability, Super Awareness, Super Privacy, Super Communication, Super AI, Super Protection, and Super Reliability. The car will support L3-level autopilot thanks to a roof-mounted lidar. Huawei has also confirmed the integration of three intelligent systems: smart driving, smart cockpit, and smart control, which are based on the second-generation Turing platform.
With preliminary prices ranging from €124,320 to €186,510, the Huawei Maextro S800 will be one of the most expensive Chinese-made cars. This is a bold move for Huawei, and it may work in the Chinese market. The electric vehicle market in China is developing rapidly, and luxury car buyers are ready to switch from gasoline engines to electric ones.
