Business Insider has released an interesting article, which includes interviews with psychologists and remote workers and, among other things, assesses how working from home affects the formation of our habitsRemote work has many advantages, such as no formal wear and no morning commute, but there are also disadvantages — and one of them is that working from home «turns us into savages»
Psychologists say that the time we spend alone without other people can lead to loss of muscle memory, impaired socialization and the formation of some strange habitsthat you’ll have to keep secret when you’re back in the public eye.The Business Insider article, for example, mentions statistics showing that «home-based workers» workers are more likely to neglect hygiene compared to office-based workers (although the gap is not too great): 73% of respondents said they showered before work from home, while the figure was 85% among office workers; only 81% of remote workers use deodorant compared to 95% of office workers; and the difference is even smaller when it comes to brushing their teeth, at 92% versus 95%.
Of course, remote workers also feel freer in their choice of clothing, and, judging by discussions online, sometimes they don’t change their pajamas (or have two sets — day and night). Among the strange habits that are formed while working from home, they also mention talking to yourself, singing, or even taking breaks to dance — freedoms that are unlikely to be adequately perceived in the office
«In the office, the people around us control our behavior, or at least make us more vigilant about what we do,» says William Chopik, a social psychologist at Michigan State University. «You probably don’t talk to yourself, say weird things, start singing. I do all of these things at home, and the truth is, I would die of horror if I did it in front of other people.
Another example is mentioned by the author of the article herself:
«Some time ago, a friend of mine used to work from the bathtub, reading and typing on the computer while taking an hour-long bath».
Of the minuses — Many people have trouble taking breaks at homeThey are either not done at all, or short ones accidentally turn into long ones (hello, procrastination)And, in fact, homework can be expected to affect «rusting» some of the soft skills needed to communicate with colleagues in the office. What strange habits have you developed while working from home?
