Sony has unveiled the second generation of its flagship Alpha 1 camera. Keeping with the company’s tradition of obscure names, the new camera is called Alpha 1 II.
The original Alpha 1 was a versatile camera with a high speed of 8K photo and video shooting. Alpha 1 II inherits the 50.1-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, but adds a new AI processor.
This has improved the autofocus capabilities. Autofocus can now detect a wider range of subjects, including animals, birds, insects, and various types of vehicles. The camera can also detect and track a person’s pose, even when they are moving or turning their head.
Sony Alpha 1 II has also received improved image stabilization, which is now estimated at 8.5 stops in the center of the frame (previously 5.5 stops) and 7 stops on the periphery. The new camera also has a pre-capture mode that allows you to capture the moment before you press the shutter button in case you are too late.
Alpha 1 II has a new screen with wider rotation capabilities. Instead of moving along a single axis, as in the previous model, the new screen can be fully rotated in all directions along 4 axes. The electronic viewfinder has a new deeper eye cap that comes as standard. The camera body has also been redesigned with a better grip and more shortcut buttons.
The new camera has many of the same connectivity features as the previous model, but Sony has upgraded the Ethernet from 1Gbps to 2.5Gbps. Finally, the camera comes with a new BC-ZD1 charger that can charge two Z batteries at the same time. The rest of the camera is more or less identical original 2021 model.
The Sony Alpha 1 II with a price of $6500 will be available for purchase from December 2024.
