Study: people checked their phones an average of 205 times a day in 2024 — every 5 minutes, excluding sleep

In the latest study by Reviews.org, it is shown how people used smartphones in 2024, based on a survey conducted in the USA.

According to the report, in 2024, Americans checked their phones on average 205 times a day — effectively once every 5 minutes excluding sleep time.

Approximately 80.6% of Americans check their phones within the first 10 minutes of waking up, and about half of the respondents keep it at hand during the night. 78% of respondents cannot leave home without their phone, and 76% respond to notifications within the first five minutes.

Nearly 40% of people panic when their battery level falls below 20%, and another 27% use their phone while driving.

On average in 2024, Americans spent 4 hours and 30 minutes per day on their smartphone, yet only 43.2% of respondents admitted to feeling addicted to mobile devices. ZoomersGeneration Z (colloquially known as ‘zoomers’) — a term applied to people born approximately from the mid-1990s to the early 2010s. and millennialsMillennials or Generation Y — a generation typically categorized as people born approximately from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s. are expectedly the most active users among generations, spending an average of six hours a day on their phones, while boomersBaby boomers (also known as boomers) are a demographic cohort following the Silent Generation and preceding Generation X. The baby boomer generation is most often defined as individuals born between 1946 and 1964. and “silent generation”Silent Generation — people born from 1925 to 1944. spend about two hours a day on their smartphones. Overall, 95% of teenagers in the USA now own smartphones, and this percentage has consistently increased over the last decade.

Meanwhile, the usage of smartphones during meals and work hours has significantly decreased, but all this seems to have shifted to the use of mobile devices during movie watching — 88.8% admitted that they check their smartphones in movie theaters.

The percentage of people upgrading their phones has decreased by 35.5% compared to last year, and currently, fewer users feel the need to spend money on the latest model.
