John Wick’s Spinoff, starring Ana de Armas as «Ballerina», fell into production hell, forcing director Chad Stagelski to reshoot the film from scratch.
If you recall, the release dates of «Ballerina» changed regularly (which is reflected in the of our previous materials) — was called either 2024 or 2026. It turned out that the postponement was due to problematic production and dissatisfaction with the work of director Len Weisman.
According to The WrapThe first version of the film «Ballerina» turned out to be «messy» in Lionsgate’s view and did not pass the test, while director «John Wick» Chad Stagelski was tasked with re-shooting it. According to one insider, «a significant part of the» film was reshot in Prague, and Wiseman was not on the set.
The reshoots took 2-3 months (sometimes it takes the same amount of time to make a movie from scratch) — and this affected development of the remake «Highlander», who was under the care of Stagelski. In the end, lead actor Henry Cavill has signed on to «Voltron» (answer to the question to the previous news about «What about Highlander?»).
«Chad had to clean up someone else’s mess. Remember that this movie is basically John Wick 3.5», — says the insider. «This story takes place before John Wick 4, and after that movie, they can’t have a flop on anything Wick related».
All this time, the film did not release any promotional materials, We were shown the first trailer only three weeks ago. According to the synopsis, de Armas’s character is a ballerina and an experienced assassin who seeks revenge on those who destroyed her family (the character appeared briefly in «John Wick 3», but was played by Unité Phelan).
The rest of the cast includes Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, Gabrielle Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and the late Lance Reddick. Keanu Reeves himself makes an appearance, but not as a cameo, but as a full-fledged character. Earlier it became known that David Castañeda and Sharon Duncan-Brewster were added to the cast of «Ballerinas» — the new characters were brought in during the reshoots, they were not in the original script.
Ian McShane in an interview with The One Show BBC (via worldofreel) hinted that the original «Ballerina» was not «good enough», so re-shoots (or rather «newshots», as the actor himself emphasized) could not be avoided.
In the end, we were not given a release date for «Ballerina», and the first trailer only modestly hinted at it — «coming soon».
