Who uses ChatGPT? Men account for 85% of the audience, and more than half of the users are under 25 years old

Analytics company Appfigures (via TechCrunch) has published new data on ChatGPT usage, and it turns out that women and middle-aged people are not too fond of OpenAI’s AI models.

Thus, the vast majority of service users are men — 84.5%, while more than 50% of the audience is under 25. The latter figure is quite expected, given that young people are more open to experimenting with new technologies, or simply don’t like doing their own homework (according to the Pew Research Center, a quarter of teenagers in the US use ChatGPT for schoolwork) At the same time, users aged 50-64 make up the second largest demographic group with 20.2% of users.

As for the total spending on AI applications, thanks to OpenAI, in 2024 it increased to $1.42 billion — 274% more than in 2023. It is also interesting to note that ChatGPT earns more than thousands of competing programs combined, given its super popularity (although this hegemony was somewhat disrupted recently by the Chinese DeepSeek, which outperformed its main competitor in the App Store and Play Store).

Obviously, the success of these programs is a boon for Apple and Google, which retain about 30% of the revenue from in-app purchases. According to Appfigures, the total market of mobile AI applications has reached $2 billion.

To date, the ChatGPT app has been downloaded about 353 million times Earlier, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the following bold plans to have their AI used by every eighth person on the planet

Despite the fact that women play a prominent role in the AI industry, recent surveys show that they are more skeptical about the technology. Thus, 53% of women surveyed by Axios said that would not allow children to use AI (compared to 26% of men). Given that McKinsey predicts that women are more likely to lose their jobs due to automationwomen than their male counterparts, this attitude seems justified.
