500 SIM cards and thousands of broken hearts: a group of 792 crypto fraudsters arrested in Nigeria

High-tech crypto hacks are mind-blowing, but good old social engineering methods are still kicking ass. And here’s one of the loudest incidents. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria (EFCC) conducted one of the largest anti-corruption operations in the crypto realm. In the Big Leaf Building on Victoria Island (Lagos), 792 suspects were detained, including 193 foreigners from China, the Philippines, Pakistan, and other countries.

According to the report by EFCC, the building housed 500 SIM cards, powerful computers, and mobile devices used for deception. Criminals created fake profiles on popular social networks (Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram) to communicate with victims. They lured them into the yooto.com platform, which mimicked an investment program. Registration started at $35, and then the fraudsters also persuaded them to invest in a fake cryptocurrency.

Accomplices underwent training to conduct “romantic” correspondences with victims, promising lucrative investments. Among the victims were many residents of the USA, Canada, Mexico, and Europe.

The detained individuals will face trial after the investigation is completed.

Recently, criminals hacked the page of Canadian rapper Drake on the social network X (formerly known as Twitter), and used his account to promote a scam meme-coin based on the Solana blockchain. The fake token managed to reach a trading volume of $5 million.
