Amazon has updated its Kindle e-reader lineup with the release of four brand new devices (including a color screen).
The company first introduced the Kindle in 2007, and since then, all new devices have come with a black and white screen — Kindle Colorsoft breaks with this tradition. The device has a display designed so that colors don’t look blurry or pixelated, even when users zoom in on the image. The price of the reader is $279, while the battery, according to Amazon, can last for «weeks of operation». The device is available for pre-order on the company’s website from today, while customers will start receiving the device on October 30.

Other new products include the updated Kindle Scribe for $399 with note-taking features, the updated Kindle Paperwhite for $159, and the 12th generation Kindle, which costs $109. At a press conference in New York, Amazon’s Head of Devices Panos Panay called the «release the biggest update in the Kindle» line.
Kindle Scribe comes with a pen that allows users to take notes, make to-do lists, and jot down notes directly on the pages of the book they’re reading — while the text automatically shifts around them (thanks to a new feature called «Active Canvas»).

The reader also received generative artificial intelligence that will summarize notes into a short list. Amazon says that this feature uses the Bedrock software tool, which allows users to access large language models from Amazon and other companies such as Anthropic and Stability AI.
The device is available for pre-order and will ship to customers on December 4.

Updated Kindle Paperwhite is faster than previous models and also has a larger 7-inch display (compared to the 6.8-inch display in the previous version), while Kindle 12th generation is touted as the most «compact» e-reader with a brighter display. Both are available to order from today.
