A perfect way to surprise your colleagues at an online meeting.

Jouke Waleson modernized an old Dutch telephone from «1950» that he had kept for 15 years. The inventor integrated an ESP32 microcontroller with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules into the device.

The developer successfully tested the headset during a video conference in Google Meet. One of the participants noted the special sound of the device: «I didn’t realize how much I missed this sound quality! It’s great. We heard you very clearly, without distortion».

To complete the project, Valeson installed a new stereo ADCADC (Analog-to-digital converter) — a device that converts an analog signal (such as sound) into a digital format. and a DAC decoderDAC (Digital to Analog Converter) — a device that converts a digital signal back to analog.. «I spent two full days setting up the microphone and the I2S protocolI2S (Inter-IC Sound) — a serial interface standard for transferring digital audio data between devices.. Without the oscilloscope, this would not have been possible,» he said.

For those who want to create something similar, Woleson provided access to Github with additional information for inspiration, and also published video, which shows in detail how everything works.

In the video, Woleson turns on his phone, and it starts flashing lights. He then picks up the phone to demonstrate integration with Google Assistant. After asking the assistant about his schedule, Woleson receives a response about the scheduled events in his calendar. Not only can the device connect to other devices via Bluetooth, but it also works as a phone using the numbers on the device itself.

The most practical element of this device is probably that Woleson plans to put it on his bedside table so that he can leave his smartphone in another room overnight.
