Apple has added a calculator to the new iPadOS 18 for the first time in 14 years — it supports handwriting

Apple unveiled iPadOS 18 at WWDC 2024. The update will be available in the fall, the developer beta will be available from today, and the public beta will be available next month.

The update finally adds a built-in calculator to Apple’s tablets — 14 years after the launch of the iPad. Users no longer need to download third-party apps to perform simple math.

The calculator is similar to the one in iOS, but additionally supports Apple Pencil — calculations can be simply written down with a stylus. The program will solve them using a feature Apple calls Math Notes.

Apple has introduced Smart Script, a program that improves the appearance of text while writing using machine learning. The program is able to reproduce the user’s handwriting, check spelling, and write the typed text in the desired handwriting.

As with iOS 18, there are new ways to personalize your home screen and a personalized Control Center. It also adds a customizable pop-up tab that makes it easier to navigate apps.
