Apple may completely stop production of the Vision Pro mixed reality headset by the end of 2024 due to low demand for the device.
Pros data According to The Information, the company has already significantly reduced the production of components for Vision Pro in early summer. Apple currently has enough devices in its warehouses to meet demand until next year.
Suppliers have manufactured components for 500,000–600,000 headsets. Some factories stopped producing parts back in May due to pessimistic sales forecasts from Apple. Tens of thousands of unused components are still stored in warehouses.
The Chinese company Luxshare, which assembles Vision Pro, received a notice from Apple about a possible curtailment of production in November. Now the company produces almost a thousand devices a day, which is half of its peak performance.
Apple has also suspended development of the second generation Vision Pro for at least a year. Instead, the company focused on creating a budget version of the headset. Manufacturers plan to produce 4 million of such devices over the entire product life cycle. Interestingly, Apple has halved the production plan compared to the original Vision Pro, which indicates even lower expectations for the sales of the budget model.
Despite stopping work on the second-generation Vision Pro, the company may release an interim update with minimal design changes and a new processor. This will make it possible to use surplus components from the supply chain.
