The next version of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 smartwatch will support satellite communications. This will allow users to send text messages even without access to mobile communication or Wi-Fi. These innovations were reported by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.
Additionally, it is reported that Apple Watch Ultra 3 is likely to receive a blood pressure monitoring function. Although this feature was previously planned for launch in 2023, its implementation was postponed. This feature will not be able to provide accurate pressure measurement, but it will be able to warn the user about possible hypertension (high blood pressure).
Satellite communication first appeared in the iPhone 14 in 2022, and last year it was expanded to communicate with emergency services. This year, Apple added the ability to send text messages to anyone via iMessage. However, until now, this required an iPhone. With the Apple Watch Ultra 3, users will be able to use satellite communication capabilities even if they lose their smartphone.
These new features are Apple’s attempt to revive smartwatch sales, which have slowed down recently. The company hopes that satellite communication and blood pressure monitoring will be attractive enough for users to upgrade their devices.
In addition, next year, some Apple Watch models will switch to MediaTek modems instead of Intel. This will be the first time Apple will use a core component from MediaTek. The new modems will support 5G Redcap, a 5G standard specifically designed for devices that do not require fast connections.
