The British mobile operator O2 has developed Daisy (or dAIsy) artificial intelligence that imitates the most popular target of fraudsters — an elderly woman.
The system works around the clock without human intervention. First, it converts the fraudster’s voice into text, then generates a response through a special language model with the character of an old lady, and then converts the text into voice. During the conversation, AI provides fraudsters with false banking data.
The developers collaborated with Jim Browning is a popular YouTuber who exposes phone scams. On his channel, as on many others, the authors use voice modulators to sound like elderly people and expose fraudsters.
O2 has added Daisy numbers to the list of «easy targets» for fraudsters. The system is so convincing that it keeps scammers on the line for up to 40 minutes, making them more and more irritated.
«We’re committed to stopping fraudsters by investing in a range of protection technologies — from firewalls to spam call detection. Daisy reminds us that the caller is not always who they say they are,» said Murray Mackenzie, Head of Fraud at Virgin Media O.
According to O2 research, 71% of Britons would like to take revenge on fraudsters who have cheated them or their loved ones, but are not willing to spend their own time on it. That’s why the company created Daisy.
It is ironic that fraudsters themselves use similar technologies to imitate the voices of victims’ relatives.
