Asus, Samsung, and MSI announce world’s first 27-inch 4K OLED monitors with 240Hz frequency

It seems that 27-inch 4K OLED monitors with a 240Hz refresh rate are like buses: you wait for them forever, and then three of them show up at once. Asus, Samsung, and MSI have announced next-generation gaming monitors with QD-OLED technology that offer the benefits of 4K OLED panels at 240Hz in a smaller 27-inch size than the usual 32 inches.

All three models appear to be based on the same fourth-generation QD-OLED panel from Samsung Display. Asus claims that these panels have a longer lifespan than previous generations of OLEDs.

The Asus ROG Swift OLED PG27UCDM and MSI MPG 272URX QD-OLED models are equipped with DisplayPort 2.1a (UHBR20) ports that provide 80 Gbps bandwidth. This allows you to transmit 4K images at 240 Hz without using Display Stream Compression (DSC). Samsung’s press release about the Odyssey OLED G8 (G81SF) does not mention the DisplayPort 2.1a connector, but it is likely to be supported as well.

Both MSI and Asus models support DisplayHDR True Black 400, and Asus also supports Dolby Vision HDR. Both MSI and Asus offer a three-year warranty that includes anti-fade protection, but Samsung has not yet confirmed the warranty terms for its latest G8 model. Samsung also hasn’t fully disclosed the specs of its latest monitor, but it’s reasonable to assume that it will support at least DisplayHDR True Black 400.

Interestingly, the Asus model has a visible display of only 26.5 inches, but MSI and Samsung position their monitors as 27-inch. Since all three offer OLED response times of 0.03 ms, a refresh rate of 240 Hz, and pixel densities of over 160 PPI to improve text clarity, the choice will really come down to design, features, and price. Unfortunately, the companies have not yet announced launch dates and prices.
