Quite unexpectedly, the German automaker Audi has launched a new brand of electric vehicles designed exclusively for the Chinese market. This new brand is called AUDI (not to be confused with Audi), which is not very original. It is a joint venture with the Chinese automaker SAIC. The new brand, in addition to a noticeably different name, is also distinguished by the rejection of the iconic four-ring logo.
The first model of the new brand is the AUDI E concept, which demonstrates the future look of electric vehicles aimed at the Chinese market. The car has a sportback body and is 4870 mm long, 1990 mm wide, 1460 mm high and has a wheelbase of 2950 mm. The design was created with the preferences of Chinese consumers in mind.
Instead of the usual four rings, the AUDI E features the illuminated inscription «AUDI» on the front and rear of the vehicle and on the wheel covers. The traditional grille has been replaced by black rings containing LED lighting and sensors for the driver assistance systems.
The interior of the concept offers microfiber upholstery, illuminated wood accents, and a curved 4K touchscreen. The latter combines instruments, an infotainment system, and digital mirrors. The interior is complemented by the AI-based voice assistant AUDI Assistant and the AUDI Control touchscreen.
The AUDI E concept is based on the new Advanced Digitized Platform, which Audi developed in collaboration with SAIC. Two electric motors provide a total output of 764 hp and 800 Nm of torque, ensuring acceleration to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. The 100 kWh battery provides a range of up to 700 km on the CLTC cycle, and thanks to 800-volt charging, 370 km can be added in 10 minutes.
The partnership with SAIC allows Audi to create electric vehicles that meet the local preferences of the Chinese market, utilizing SAIC’s experience in this segment. Simply put, Chinese buyers want Chinese electric vehicles. That’s why the company decided to create a joint AUDI brand.
Starting in mid-2025, AUDI plans to launch three production models of electric vehicles in the medium and large segments.
