Australia imposes one of the world’s toughest restrictions on the use of social media.
Children under the age of 16 are prohibited from creating accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and similar social networks. As noted by Bloomberg the law will come into force in a year, with the responsibility for violations falling on the shoulders of social media companies — with fines of up to $32.4 million.
The text of the bill does not specify how companies should check the age.
According to by the YouGov poll, more than 77% of Australians support this initiative, while tech companies are expected to criticize the law for being ill-conceived and lacking implementation.
Last week, Elon Musk, the owner of social network X, wrote that the new law looks like a «dark way to control Internet access for all Australians».
