Black western comedy teaser «Eddington» — Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and conspiracy theories in the midst of a pandemic

A24 has released the first teaser trailer for Ari Astaire’s next film «Eddington» —, a black, and seemingly no longer very relevant, western comedy about COVID-19.

«Of course, they keep looking at that lab in China», — the voiceover says in the video. «This was installed in 1956, and of course that was the year Tom Hanks was born, the first celebrity with the virus».

Set in the midst of a pandemic in the small New Mexico town of the same name, «Eddington» tells the story of a confrontation between the sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and the mayor (Pedro Pascal), who is up for re-election. Emma Stone plays the sheriff’s wife, while Austin Butler stars as a charismatic preacher; the rest of the cast includes Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Michael Ward, Clifton Collins Jr. and Amelie Hoferle.

In the video, all the characters are shown only with statements from their social media pages, so we are waiting for an extended trailer in the near future.

Ari Aster wrote, directed, and produced «Eddington» —, his fourth feature film after «Heredity» (2018), «Solstice» (2019), and «All fears of Bo» (2023). All of them were created from A24, and in the third one Phoenix played the main role.

The world premiere of the film will take place at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025, and on July 18, «Eddington» will be released in theaters.
