Gearbox’s narrative director Sam Winkler has announced his intention to significantly reduce the amount of «toilet humor» in the upcoming Borderlands 4, responding to criticism of the previous game.
After the presentation of the game’s new trailer at The Game Awards 2024 an active discussion about the general tone of the upcoming installment of the franchise ensued. Fans immediately noticed the darker atmosphere of the footage and the absence of the series’ traditional primitive jokes.
A lively discussion between Winkler and the fans of the series unfolded on the social network X (Twitter). In response to comments about the game’s mood change, the narrative director reiterated his position: «I can’t disclose details about BL4, but I still think there was too much toilet humor in BL3».
«I can’t say that there will be no toilet humor at all, but if the word ‘skibidi’ appears in the game while I’m in charge of it, I will burst into tears,» Winkler said.
I’m not gonna say there’s no toilets but if the word skibidi ships in the game under my watch I’m gonna cry real tears. Paul Tassi joked that we were gonna have a gun called Hawk 2A and a fellow dev asked me if it was real and I wanted to put my hand down the sink grinder

He also reacted emotionally to journalist Paul Tassi’s joking suggestion that a weapon called the «Hawk 2A» might be coming, saying that «would rather put his hand in a garbage disposal».
The new installment, judging by the trailer, offers players a more balanced approach to humor and a more serious atmosphere. The developers hint at a deeper plot and more complex characters, which may attract a new audience.
