Despite the fact that the historical drama «Brutalist» received 10 Oscar nominations, its director Brady Corbet claims that he did not benefit financially from the film.
In Mark Maron’s podcast «WTF» (via Deadline) Corbett said he made zero dollars from his last two films — as did his wife and co-writer Mona Fastwald.
«We had to live off the salary of three years ago,» says the director, noting that he was also on a global press tour for six months, which was also unpaid, but he was unable to earn money elsewhere.
Corbett added that the constant traveling, in addition to not being paid, was physically exhausting and included weekend work:
«I haven’t had a single day off since the Christmas break,» he said, adding that he probably gave «about 90 interviews last week.
The director also notes that this situation is actually not uncommon in Hollywood:
«I’ve talked to many filmmakers who have films nominated for Oscars this year and who have no way to pay their bills».
«The Brutalist» — is a historical film set in the late 1940s that tells the story of architect Laszlo Tóth (Adrien Brody), a Hungarian Jewish survivor of Auschwitz who emigrated to the United States with his wife (Felicity Jones). In an effort to overcome his poverty, Laszlo agrees to renovate the house of the mysterious businessman Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce). After the work is completed, Van Buren and his son make Toth an offer to participate in a monumental architectural project, which leads to irreparable consequences.
The film became quite famous even before the premiere due to its seven-year production process, and gained wider attention after numerous nominations for «Oscar». «The Brutalist» is up for Best Picture, as well as awards for acting, directing and screenplay — at the same time, industry insiders suggest that the film’s victory may be in question due to the use of artificial intelligence to edit Brody’s Hungarian pronunciation and create some architectural drawings. It should be noted that the use of technology did not prevent «Brutalist» from winning «Golden Globe» for Best Drama.
The film will debut in Ukrainian theaters in two days, on February 20.
