Edition Variety collected the opinions of famous directors about the best films of the year. Christopher Nolan praised the sequel to «Gladiator» and explained in detail why this particular film made the biggest impression on him.
Nolan praised Ridley Scott’s skill in creating a sequel to the iconic film. In his opinion, the director successfully combined the emotionality of the original with the larger central theme of the sequel.
«Scott lets the world of Gladiator 2 speak for itself, showing us who we are again, simply by inviting us to enjoy this crazy journey. Why are there sharks in the Colosseum? Because we demanded it, and Scott has masterfully given it to us», — Nolan wrote.
The director noted an innovative approach to staging battle scenes. According to him, Scott uses multi-camera shooting, which differs significantly from the original, turning each sequence into a stunning spectacle.
Nolan paid special attention to the first shot of the movie, where Paul Mescal’s hand gently touches the grain — a reference to the wheat fields from the first part. The director emphasized that the magnificent cinematography and meticulous design brought a new depth to the visual language of the film.
«I’ve always been a big fan of Ridley Scott, especially as a kid. “Alien and Blade Runner just blew me away with the way they created extraordinary, fully immersive worlds,» Nolan admitted.
As a reminder, «Gladiator 2» was released in November. The story takes place 16 years after the first part. The protagonist Lucius, grandson of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of Lucilla, lives with his family in Numidia. After an attack by General Marcus Acacius’ troops, the man is turned into a slave, and his life begins to resemble the fate of Maximus from the original film. On Rotten Tomatoes «Gladiator 2» has 71% «freshness»
