Despite praiseworthy first reactions for the movie «Captain America: Brave New World», which were actively circulating on the Internet on the eve of the premiere, the ratings on review aggregator sites put everything in its place.
Currently, the new Marvel movie 51% «freshness» on Rotten Tomatoes based on 121 reviews, which is one of the lowest scores for MCU projects. The situation is no better on Metacritic — 43 out of 100 based on 41 reviews.
«Captain America: The Brave New World» features Anthony Mackie as the new Cap for the first time, after the actor made his Marvel debut as Sam Wilson/Falcon and inherited the shield from Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) in «The Avengers: Endgame». The film is expected to earn around $190 million worldwide for its debut, but given the early estimates, these predictions no longer seem plausible.
«What we get is a narrative that is as confusing as it is boring, the visuals are unappealing and uninspiring. The movie is disappointing enough to be forgettable», — writes Aidan Kelly from Collider.
In general, the reviews complain about the large number of new characters that confuse the plot, the ridiculous dialogues and the overuse of political intrigue, but they also note the excellent work of the duo of Maki and Danny Ramirez (the new Falcon).
«Captain America — is neither good nor bad. It’s just a new Marvel movie», — summarizes Dylan Roth of Observer.
In addition to Maki and Ramirez, the main roles in «Brave New World» are played by Harrison Ford (Thaddeus «Thunderbird» Ross), Giancarlo Esposito (Sidewinder) and Shira Haas (Sabra). The movie has been broadcast in Ukrainian cinemas since yesterday.
The new «Captain America» was rumored to have a problematic production: the last reshoots were actually held three months before the premiere and before that, three main action scenes were re-shoot, and a new screenwriter was hired to write «additional material» with new characters. Similarly, all three test screenings of the movie were allegedly unsuccessful, whichdescribed it as «insignificant» and «flat». According to rumors, the film’s budget exceeded $300 million, but Marvel insists that it spent only $180 million.
