Dead Space / Steam
The creative team of the original game and the remake are ready to return to development, but the publisher is not interested in continuing the series.
Glen Schofield, the creator of the cult horror series Dead Space, presented the concept of the fourth part of the game to EA this year. The company rejected the developer, as he said in an interview with DanAllenGaming.
The first Dead Space was released in 2008, inspired by the success of Capcom’s Resident Evil 4. The game transferred the survival horror format to outer space, impressing players with an atmosphere of horror and dynamic gameplay.
The second installment received positive reviews, while the third, despite the addition of a cooperative mode, showed mediocre commercial results. EA suspended the development of the franchise until 2023, when it released a highly acclaimed remake of the first part.
Rumors, Dead Space remake did not meet EA’s commercial expectations. As a result, the publisher has once again frozen plans for further development of the franchise, including possible remakes and the development of the fourth installment.
Schofield noted that EA has its own criteria for project profitability, and the gaming industry is currently going through a difficult period for the development of new games.
After the release of Dead Space 3, the fate of the protagonist Isaac Clarke remained uncertain. It is possible that the fourth installment could introduce a new protagonist, as Scofield was not involved in the development of the next two games in the series and may not have much attachment to the character.
After working on Call of Duty: WWII, Scofield founded Striking Distance and released The Callisto Protocol — the spiritual successor to Dead Space. The game received mixed reviews due to its awkward gameplay and weak plot, although it had potential. Despite his desire to create a sequel, Scofield left the studio.
The team that worked on the remake of Dead Space also expressed interest in further work on the series. The success of Silent Hill 2 and the new Resident Evil installments demonstrates the potential of the genre, but EA may need to better balance budgets and expectations.
